During his high school years his talent and singing was recorded by the local radio station and later by the country station in Guymon.
One of the other ranch hands had formerly played in a country music band and taught Humphry how to play the guitar.
With permission from the owner of the ranch he had been employed on for the past ten years, he brought Humphry to the ranch.
He was given custody of Humphry and later adopted him.
He stopped by to check on Humphry and found the house burned down and no one in sight, but he finally found Humphry hiding in the hay loft of the barn.
He went on to visit his parents out in Guymon, OK, where he left his horse and drove back in the pickup his Dad helped him buy.
James bought groceries and fixed the place up while enduring the wrath from the mother.
When James Cotton stopped by to see if he could water his horse and fill his canteen he found the place ran down and in dire need of repair, plus they were out of groceries.
His older brother was nine years older than Humphry and left home in the mornings, returning when he pleased leaving all of the chores for young Humphry who was blamed for any thing that was wrong.
