Descriere magazin:
This coming-of-age story, set between 1884 and 1886, centers on a large Norwegian family living and working on an ancient farm, a patch of ground that has for centuries been passed from one generation to the next. Readers will see the rhythm of life that changes with the seasons; they\'ll hear old stories and Norse lore, see the Hystad family celebrate Scandinavian customs and traditions, and learn a bit about Norway in the Viking days. The themes are universal: establishing good relationships with others in daily life; accepting responsibility for chores that change with the seasons; developing self-awareness; making important decisions; coping with life\'s challenges; moving forward with hope and confidence. The tale begins with a heart-breaking loss for the young heroine, Britha, but with that loss comes new possibilities: chances to help herself and others find their true selves and expand their horizons. The setting moves from rural Stord Island to Bergen, where Britha learns to navigate in an urban area--and faces danger along the way. She makes friends with a variety of interesting people and is exposed to exciting cultural events and new ideas--a huge awakening for the country girl that changes her sense of self so dramatically that new avenues open for her. When Britha returns home to Stord Island for a long Christmas visit, a mysterious--and maybe dangerous--artifact from the past is discovered in a hidden place. This first discovery sends the family off on treasure hunts in their old, old house. Unexpected finds from their shared history bring the family closer than ever, making it harder for Britha to decide where to spend the rest of her life: stay with family on Stord Island, return to Bergen, or make a bold leap and leave Norway for a new life in America?
