Historians overwhelmingly have blamed the demise of Reconstruction on Southerners\' persistent racism. Washington\'s Up from Slavery. She examines such issues as black suffrage, disenfranchisement, taxation, westward migration, lynching, and civil rights to detect the trajectory of Northern disenchantment with Reconstruction.
