In August 334 BC, Alexander the Great invaded the Persian Empire and systematically set about its conquest. At the core of Alexander\'s army were 10,000 members of the phalanx, the phalangites. Armed with a long pike and fighting in formations up to 16 ranks deep, these grizzled veterans were the mainstay of the Macedonian army. Facing them were the myriad armies of the peoples that made up the Persian Empire. At the center of these forces was the formation known as the Immortals: 10,000 elite infantry, armed with spears and bows. About the Author Murray Dahm is a freelance historian and the author of Breaking the Spartans: Epaminondas, Pelopidas, and the Brief Glory of Thebes . He has written more than 50 articles for magazines such as Ancient Warfare , Medieval Warfare and Ancient History . Murray lives in New South Wales, Australia. Peter Dennis was born in 1950. Inspired by contemporary magazines such as Look and Learn he studied illustration at Liverpool Art College. Peter has since contributed to hundreds of books, predominantly on historical subjects, including many Osprey titles. A keen wargamer and model maker, he is based in Nottinghamshire, UK .
