Conan Doyle, meanwhile, returned to England determined to abandon medicine in favor of writing. In particular, he turned to a character inspired by the very scientific methods that Koch had formulated: Sherlock Holmes. About the Author: Thomas Goetz is a science writer and health-care innovator. The cofounder of Iodine, a health technology company, he has served as entrepreneur in residence at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and executive editor at WIRED.
